Free Creative Business e-Book

I recently came across an excellent free e-book for Creative businesses, T-Shirts and Suits – A Guide to the Business of Creativity.

An experienced consultant to creative enterprises, David Parrish combines sound business advice with an understanding of the creative mind, and also includes examples of real world successes. Highly recommended – even if you aren’t planning a business J

Fuelling your Creativity

A very Happy New Year to all my readers! The Tapping into Creativity Newsletter is now entering its second year. Many thanks to each of you for your continued support and interaction – it’s fantastic to know you’re out there, and here’s to a whole new year of creative discovery J

One aspect of creativity I often mention is taking advantage of the opportunities that arise, but we need to be prepared. Here is a way to get fueled up and ready to go when they strike.

Creative Quotes
Creativity comes when you are relaxed, happy and enjoying the moment. And when it comes, it brings ideas that rock your world – Robin Sharma

Uncertainty and mystery are energies of life. Don’t let them scare you unduly, for they keep boredom at bay and spark creativity – R. I. Fitzhenry

Fuelling your Creativity
We often have hours at a time to kill while waiting for something to happen – even if it’s just the end of the day J Typically, we feel restless and irritable, stuck inside when we could be out, or frustrated by the pace at which a project is moving. Surprisingly, this is some of our most valuable time. In the spaces between other activities our creative abilities tend to be heightened, but being in the midst of duty we seldom associate these situations with creativity. So how can we take advantage of these creative opportunities?

Being human, we are all natural innovators, and all have thoughts, ideas and questions that intrigue us, and things we’re keen to try out ‘when we have the time’. The trick is making sure we remember them when that time appears.

The core of this idea is keeping a list, making a note of each one as it occurs to you. It’s a good idea to include both personal and work-related items, but only write down what genuinely interests you – we seldom feel creative about another To Do list J

It’s a bit of a routine change, so buy a pad or notebook and pen that will survive in your bag or pocket, and make sure that you keep them with you. Then when you catch your mind wondering about the intricacies of a circuit board or the walking bass line you heard last night, they’re easily at hand to make a note. When you have 15 minutes or half an hour spare, pull out your list and have a look at what can be done – even activities (trying out a craft class, designing a new approval process) usually require some research and planning. Use short allocations of time (15-20 mins) for a quick Wikipedia search, and longer amounts (30 mins to a few hours) for in-depth research, planning and quick projects.

The more we can do in our ‘spare’ time, the easier it is to make time for completing bigger projects. The discoveries that have fulfilled our curiosity leave us a sense of accomplishment, often leading to whole new lines of inquiry and ideas to experiment with.

Bringing this creative focus into our lives gets our imaginations fired up. As you go along, you’ll find questions and activities forming around specific areas of creative enquiry, leading to deeper and richer creative experiences.

Wishing you a wonderful year of self-discovery and creative fulfillment.
